February 07, 2012HOW MANY CALORIES DO YOU BURN IN YOGA PRACTICE?
Depending on your body and the length of class, you will burn anywhere from 400 to 600 calories in a class.
Based on the above website, you will burn 400-600 calories in a one hour class of power yoga in a heated room. Other things that burn that many calories include jogging, swimming, hiking on an incline, and jumping rope. The more you weigh, the more calories you will burn. It takes between 28 and 43 minutes to burn 400 calories jumping rope or jogging at a moderate pace. Swimming at a moderate pace takes 35 – 52 minutes to burn 400 calories but if you are a walker, it will take you 1 to 1.5 hours to burn those same 400 calories. All of these activities will burn 400 calories. It’s up to you to choose which one you prefer. Me, I prefer walking, swimming or yoga, but only power yoga keeps me interested for that long of a time period. I get bored swimming after about 15 minutes and I usually only walk for about 30 minutes at a moderate pace. I can hike in the woods for longer, but I’m usually moving a little slower, appreciating the scenery.
My advice is to do what works for you in terms of staying active, being healthy and lose weight as an after thought. My goal is not to burn calories, but to be healthy. If I concentrate on being healthy, then I am not worried about my weight in regards to my appearance. I am concentrating on a positive aspect of life rather than focusing on the extra pounds around my middle. Focusing on the positive during an emergency, at a crossroads, or when under stress is good. Focusing on the positive about how to change your life will make you happier than looking at what is wrong with your life. If you only look at how much you weigh, you aren’t looking at what you have but rather what you don’t have. I can focus on the fact that I have rolls at my stomach or I can focus on the fact that I have a strong, healthy body that gave birth to three children and continues to be strong, healthy and beautiful. I much prefer being strong, healthy and beautiful and yoga helps me be that.

February 03, 2012I like wearing tights, but lately I have found myself wearing leggings more and more. They are sturdier and warmer than tights and panty hose and I can wear them with dresses and skirts. My daughter and I both like to wear them under shorts when working out.
